Frequently Asked Questions About French Doors
French doors are a style of hinged double doors that come in construction grades for exterior use as patio doors and various interior uses. French doors were named as such after first appearing in French architecture.
This door style is used for exterior and interior needs. The design is popular for its unique beauty, often featuring a built-in pattern of small square panes. Today’s models often have optional grilles that can be attached to create this pattern. French doors with glass can also feature single long solid panels without the pattern of small glass panes.
French doors are also a favorite of homeowners who want wide glass exterior doors to allow a flow of natural light into interior living spaces and to achieve a more stylized aesthetic than standard sliding doors provide.
Your French doors installation cost will include various factors. The total costs of purchasing and installing these doors vary widely between grades of construction quality, manufacturers, aesthetic design elements, and levels of energy efficiency. Today’s average price range for interior French doors, installed, is around $750 to $1,200. Exterior French doors, which are much heavier and more substantially built to weather the outdoor elements may cost from $1,000 to $5,000. This broad range is due to multiple pricing factors, often including significant wholesale and retail markup.
Yes, this is frequently done. It is a straightforward process to replace sliding doors with French doors, and it can be a great investment in your home. Replacing an old outdated slider with energy-efficient hinged French doors helps reduce energy costs and improves comfort. (Vinyl French doors offer greater energy efficiency than wood or aluminum models.) Adding French doors can also improve curb appeal and help increase your property value. To replace a sliding door with French doors:
- First, remove the old sliding door.
- Check to ensure the opening is both level and plumb.
- Order your new French doors in dimensions that are 3/4 inch narrower and 1/2 inch shorter than the opening.
- Prepare the opening by installing a water-resistant barrier along the top and bottom.
- Attach sill flashing with proper tape.
- Install support for the sill by attaching it to the outside of the box plate. Make sure it is flush with the subflooring.
- Next, remove hardware from the new door. (Leave the shipping spacers in place, to help keep the door closed and aligned during installation)
- Seal inside the opening ¾” from the exterior, and along the area where the threshold will be set, and ¼” from the outside edge of the wood blocking.
After you have completed steps 1 through 8, you are ready to install your new French doors as you would do in any opening that has been properly prepared. Now you can begin the process of installing your French doors:
- Set the door into the opening. Check to make sure the door frame is both square and plumb. Place shims around the door to make adjustments until it is set ideally square and plumb.
- Fasten the nail fin to the opening using 2” galvanized roofing nails. Remove the plastic shipping spacers. Use 3” screws to attach hinges, ensuring the screws securely penetrate the door frame.
- Fold the water-resistant barrier down, and cover the nail fin with the flashing (overlapping the tape on the sides).
- Spray insulative foam sealant between the raw opening and the door frame. (Do not use latex foam or high-pressure applications.)
- Install the backer rod and door hardware.
- Seal along the outside perimeter of the door frame with exterior sealant.
- Prime and paint the interior and exterior of the door and frame. Touch up paint on walls around the door as needed.
Interior and exterior French doors installation processes differ due to the different needs for weather protection at exterior openings to your home. To obtain instructions for interior French doors installation, contact your door installation expert.
Measure the inside of the door frame. Take the following 3 measurements. Round the measurements upward, for consistency with manufacturing and construction standard methods. Measure:
- Width: Measure the door frame across the top, bottom, and middle.
- Height: Measure the height at the left side, right side, and in the middle of the door frame.
- Door Jamb Width: Measure the distance from the back of the exterior trim of the frame to the back of the trim on the interior side, to ensure that the door will fit flush with the wall.
Round height and width measurements upward. Use the largest measurements for height and width — if there is no more than a small discrepancy between the smallest and largest of the 3 measurements for height and width.
If there is a significant discrepancy between height or width measurements, that means the door frame is probably not plumb. You may be able to realign the frame opening with shims. But in some cases, it may be necessary to modify the door frame or even the rough opening.
French doors are made for use as exterior entry doors from patios, as main entries to homes, and for interior doors on bedrooms, recreation rooms, offices, and other living spaces. French doors are often used to add an aesthetic design element or to provide privacy while allowing a flow of light between spaces and maintaining a visually semi-open concept. Depending on the particular ways homeowners prefer to use French doors, they may choose to immobilize one of the doors in the pair to prevent opening it. For example, they may opt to use one of the doors in the set only for its aesthetic value, or for the additional natural light or openness between living spaces that it allows.
